Carol-Anne Murphy, Lecturer in Speech and Language Therapy at University of Limerick, recently featured on RTÉ's 21st Century Child. Clinical Psychologist David Coleman presents the series, which looks at the development of 12 children and endeavours to convey something of the social and environmental context in which children are growing up in Ireland.
The episode (aired 9th November 2009) featured David Coleman visiting five of the families and looks at how the children were learning to talk. Carol-Anne gave an SLT's perspective on the development of communication within family life.
Carol-Anne said "being able to highlight some of the influencing factors and stages of communication development via the pervasive medium of TV, presents a valuable opportunity to increase awareness among a far wider audience than we're typically afforded as speech and language therapists. The task of conveying complex and nuanced information clearly and simply while being sensitive to audience and participants can be challenging at any time, and with TV you have the addition of production and editing processes, but this is outweighed by the possibility of engaging in prevention, education and awareness-raising. I believe the speech and language therapy profession is well-equipped to use local and national TV and radio to actively promote communication and its development, highlight what can go wrong and direct people toward the services we provide."
