Course Overview, Rationale and Learning Objectives:

  • Overview of NRH Assistive Technology service.
  • Introduction to assistive technology (AT).
  • Evidence base for AT use.
  • Overview of mainstream and specialist technology.
  • Case studies – adult and paediatric.
  • Breakout activity – Bring your own device.
  • Discussion & take-home messages.
  • Participants will understand the evidence base for AT use for individuals with ABI.
  • Participants will be able to list 3 pieces of mainstream technology and 3 pieces of specialist technology.
  • Participants will be able to select appropriate accessibility features and apps to support communication, cognition, and functional participation goals of individuals with cognitive and communication challenges.

Speaker Bios:

Sharon Leahy graduated with a first-class honours degree in Occupational Therapy from the National University of Ireland Galway in 2014. She has specialised in the area of Neurorehabilitation and is currently working in the National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH) in Dublin, Ireland. She has clinical experience in the areas of Brain Injury, Spinal Cord Injury, Limb Loss and Paediatrics. She has a specialist interest and expertise in the area of Paediatrics and Assistive Technology. She has over 7 years’ experience working in the field of Assistive Technology. She has represented the NRH at several national and international conferences.

Marie is Senior Speech & Language Therapist and Practice Tutor at the National Rehabilitation Hospital Dublin. She holds an honours degree in Psychology from Trinity College Dublin and a postgraduate professional qualification in Speech & Language Therapy from Queen Margaret University Edinburgh. Marie has over 10 years’ experience working in neurorehabilitation. She has a special interest in the area of assistive technology and has been involved in the establishment of the Assistive Technology Clinic at the National Rehabilitation Hospital. Marie is passionate about harnessing new and existing technologies to promote communication and enhance engagement in valued interests and life roles for individuals with acquired communication challenges.
