About Autism Level UP!

IASLT is delighted to open registration for Autism Level UP! course on 16th and 18th August.  This course is funded by the HSCP Office.
This training is a collaboration between two developmental psychologists- one neurotypical and the other neurodivergent. In keeping with the neurodiversity paradigm is a shift towards involving neurodivergent people in delivering trainings to support the neurodivergent community where this is possible. Through education, accessible resources, practical strategies and a commitment to consistently incorporating the experiences and perspectives of autistic people, we can support the autistic people that we work with

Presenter information:

  • Dr. Amy Laurent is a co-author of the SCERTS Model (SCERTS is a research-based educational approach and multidisciplinary framework that directly addresses the core challenges faced by children with autism). Dr. Laurent frequently lectures around the globe. She is passionate about neurodiversity and helping others to honor and understand the implications of "different ways of being" in relation to navigating the physical and social world.
  • Dr. Jacquelyn Fede is an Assistant Research Professor at the University of Rhode Island and an autistic self advocate. She uses her experience to mentor other autistics and to help educate others about autism through lecturing, blogging and consulting on evaluation projects.

Learning Outcomes:

  1.  Challenging Behaviour Management - Reframing understanding of challenging behaviours by examining how emotional regulation ability influences an individual’s capacity to navigate their day, particularly when difficulties are encountered. Factors influencing, and means of supporting, emotional regulation are explored from both a first-person autistic perspective, as well as a developmental perspective.
  2. Comprehensive Support for Emotional Regulation - Learning emotional regulation supports. Participants will have interactive opportunities to use the tools and strategies presented.
  3. The Mental Health Implications of Faking “Normal”- This presentation blends current research findings with the autistic speaker’s personal experience to explore what it means to mask and ways to identify masking as well as associated mental health outcomes that stem from blending in to pass as “normal.”
  4. Strategies to Support Emotional Regulation - Difficulties staying well regulated can impact relationships, daily activities and fun. This talk explores the numerous factors that impact an individual’s ability to be organised and engaged with others. Practical guidelines for providing supports for regulation to increase connectedness and fun are highlighted.
