Criminal Justice System SIG Inaugural Launch

Criminal Justice System SIG Inaugural Launch

Over the last 5 years or more, a small group of SLTs in public and private practice have been working to promote visibility of SLCNs in Criminal Justice. Although most have not worked specifically in the criminal justice area, they have had interactions with Gardai, prisons and courts in a professional capacity and consequently developed an interest. During attendance at a number of conferences and events, they became aware that the issue of SLCNs was being repeatedly highlighted, usually in the absence of reference to our profession. Despite that, in the course of asking questions and creating contacts, an interest in SLT and a little momentum about a potential role was beginning to build. To further highlight the role of SLT, IASLT contributed to pre-budget submissions, wrote submissions for the Criminal Justice and Youth Justice Strategies in 2020 and participated in public consultations.

In wanting to harness this momentum, IASLT was asked to set up a  SIG so that the profile of SLT could be more formally promoted.  It was also hoped that a SIG could develop awareness of work going on around the country and identify who is working out there in the area of criminal justice.

We are now be looking at next steps to formalise the SIG and organising an inaugural launch to highlight the role of SLT and the work that has been happening to promote SLCNs.

The launch will highlight the following:

  • Background to the SIG and ongoing networking within the criminal justice system
  • The role of SLT in the CJS:
    • The role of the SLT in Youth Justice (Niamh O’Keefe & Grace Turnbull)
    • The role of the Intermediary (Karen Henderson)
    • Representing IASLT on an advisory group led by the Minister for Justice (Paula Bradley)
  • Business of the day – appointing a committee and officers, process for joining the SIG, etc
