Group Facilitation Training with Sam Simpson & Lorraine Munro

This course supports health and social care professionals to explore, identify and develop key skills for facilitating groups effectively. It will be an interdisciplinary event including Speech and Language Therapists, Social Care Workers and Occupational Therapists. There will be an opportunity to attend on either of following two dates: 13th October and the 10th November. This course is supported by funding from the National HSCP Office.

Presenter information:


Sam Simpson

Sam is a speech and language therapist, person-centred counsellor,
supervisor and trainer with over 25 years’ experience of working in the public, private,
education and voluntary sectors. As a speech and language therapist, she has worked
in the fields of stammering and neurorehabilitation. She currently works in
independent practice offering both stammering therapy and counselling to young
people and adults. In addition to an established 1:1 and group therapy practice, Sam
offers 1:1 and group supervision to trainee and qualified health and care professionals
and counsellors. Sam regularly co-facilitates workshops and courses for health and
care professionals through intandem and with therapists at City Lit. Sam was a
Primary Tutor on the BA (Hons)/Diploma in Person Centred Counselling at Metanoia
Institute from 2017 to 2020 and since 2021 is a member of the Person-Centred
Experiential Counselling for Depression (PCE-CfD) team. Sam has a particular interest
in group work as a means of empowering clients and practitioners to learn from and
with each other and tap into their own resourcefulness.


Lorraine Munro

Lorraine is a qualified counsellor, psychotherapist, supervisor and trainer. She
has worked as a person-centred trainer for four decades, heading up the department
at Metanoia Institute for Person Centred Counselling Diploma, BA (Hons) and MSc
courses and applying her counselling and psychotherapy skills in various contexts,
including working as a primary care counsellor and psychotherapist for 15 years in a
flagship service in Derbyshire where she was able to integrate creative ways of
working with clients. She currently has a private counselling and supervisory practice
as well as being lead tutor on the Person-Centred Experiential Counselling for
Depression (PCE-CfD) IAPT and BACP approved training programme at Metanoia
Institute.

Learning Outcomes Understanding the benefits and limitations of group work.

  • Understanding the different skills involved in working in groups as compared to
    individually
  • Knowledge of the overarching theoretical principles and practice of group work
  • Development of self-awareness of existing facilitation skills and blocks in the area
    of group work
  • Development of relevant facilitation skills including responding to the changing
    needs of the group as it develops
  • Knowledge of boundaries between the role of the group and the need for individual
    support.
  • Understanding the role of ongoing professional development and supervision in this
    area following the training
