Course Overview:

Join this interactive half-day webinar exploring multidisciplinary approaches to the assessment and management of complex respiratory presentations.

Topics include: Dysfunctional Breathing & Hyperventilation Syndrome, Long COVID and Inspiratory Muscle Training (IMT). 

Designed for physiotherapists and SLTs, this session offers practical tools, current evidence and opportunities for discussion.

Speaker Bio:

Dr Rachel Garrod PhD. MSc. MCSP

Rachel graduated from Guys School of Physiotherapy in 1991 and then worked in several teaching hospitals in London. She has an M.Sc. in Health Sciences, a PhD in Pulmonary Rehabilitation and is trained in The Bradcliff Breathing approach. As Assistant Professor Physiotherapy, St George’s University she led on undergraduate and post graduate respiratory teaching and research. With over 100 peer reviewed publications, book chapters and as editor of “Pulmonary Rehabilitation: An interdisciplinary approach”, she is an international expert on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. Rachel, in conjunction with a late-stage COPD patient published “The Secret to Thriving with COPD” – a unique book written for people with COPD which advocates for pulmonary rehabilitation using the patient perspective and that of a health professional. She has an online video-based course, “A Guide to Better Breathing for Life” which is available on Udemy.com and runs an online Pulmonary rehabilitation membership programme.

Rachel moved to Spain in 2014, where she provides domiciliary and online respiratory physiotherapy in conjunction with several hospitals and clinics in Marbella.  Rachel’s area of expertise is in the delivery of exercise for people with chronic health problems, such as diabetes, COPD and cardiovascular disease. She teaches breathing re-training, Inspiratory Muscle Training and provides physical activity therapies for people with cardio-respiratory conditions, as well as offering a unique smoking cessation programme. 

Rachel continues to be active in lecturing, speaking for the British Thoracic Society, Greek Physiotherapy Society and the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists. She recently provided online teaching for Physiotherapists, “Dysfunctional Breathing” on behalf of SBK Events which was rated as “excellent and informative”. She is module lead for Galway University´s MSc in Pulmonary Rehabilitation.

13.00 – 13.05  Introduction and Welcome

13.05 – 14.50 Dysfunctional Breathing assessment and management

This session introduces dysfunctional breathing as a condition. We review assessment and screening tools and consider both SLT and PT strategies for management. 

Objectives:

  • To describe dysfunctional breathing and hyperventilation syndrome
  • To consider other causes of dysfunctional breathing including Inducible Laryngeal Obstruction (ILO) 
  • To consider assessment strategies and application of questionnaires in HVS
  • Differential diagnosis asthma vs HVS
  • Review SLT and PT management of Dysfunctional breathing in different populations including refractory cough

14.50 – 15.00    Q and A 

15.00 – 15.10    Screen break 

15.10- 16.00     Long Covid – and its management 

In this session we will be focusing on what Long COVID is, presentation and prevalence as well as considering PT and SLT management strategies.

Objectives: 

  • To understand the presentation of long Covid and its prevalence.
  • To consider the role of Autonomic Nervous System in symptoms
  • To appreciate management strategies; pacing programme (examples and explanation), breathing control/ reduced breathing
  • To be aware of importance of breath control during speech To review NICE Guidelines and ME/ CFS Guidelines
  • Be aware of some of the controversies surrounding management

16.00 – 16.10    Q and A 

16.10- 16.30      Interactive Session, Break Out Group Discussion

16.30 – 17.20     Inspiratory Muscle Training in people with respiratory disease

In this session we will look at Inspiratory muscle training as a treatment option for people with respiratory disease, including oropharyngeal training for sleep apnea. 

Objectives:

  • To review the evidence of effect of IMT in people with respiratory disease
  • To evaluate the role of IMT in other populations (post ICU, Athletes, Covid)
  • To consider training schedules with IMT including oropharyngeal exercises for sleep apnea

This event has a limited number of places, the cost per attendee is significantly subsidised by funding from the National HSCP Office, applicants must give a minimum 10 days notice of cancellation, by emailing kathleencpdadmin@iaslt.ie

This notice is required so that we can reallocate cancelled places.

Failure to give 10 days notice will result in:

  • Exclusion from further HSE funded CPD events for minimum 12 months.
  • Requirement to reimburse the FULL cost of the course.
