Person-Centred and Family-Centred Care in Practice

Person-Centred and Family-Centred Care in Practice

*Important to note -  This speaker is sharing her expertise for IASLT on a voluntary basis. The registration fees being charged are to cover administrative costs associated with hosting the webinar.

Rationale and Webinar Overview:

The terms Person-centred Practice (PCP) and Family Centred Practice (FCP) are dominant within the language of health and social care, with resounding evidence of the positive experiences, outcomes and ‘flourishing’ for both the person receiving supports and the HSCP provider, when delivering care within this model.

However, it is recognised that the reality of ‘living’ person and family centeredness, and embedding this culture in practice can be challenging. Research across healthcare professions, has indicated that while the principles of PCP and FCP are valued by HSCP’s, including SLTs, there is a recognised misalignment between the beliefs of HSCPs with regards to highly valuing PCP and FCP, and living these principles in practice.

This webinar will discuss and allow reflection on ‘what is person and family centred practice’; definitions, principles and the concepts, and how do we translate these principles into practice. The Person-centred Practice Framework will also be presented, discussing its component parts and its use as a reflective and evaluation tool in practice; both at individual and team level. Creating person-centred workplace cultures and Person-centred leadership will also be discussed, as well as developing and supporting person-centred practice into the future, through critical thinking and reflection on your own learning experiences, as well as within your role as a practice educator.

If you are an SLT student, new graduate, or an established SLT, committed to ongoing reflection and learning in delivering person and family centred care, a team leader aiming to consolidate a shared vision for your team, or practice educator seeking a framework from which future SLTs can develop into person-centred practitioners, this webinar has something to offer all SLTs working across all healthcare contexts.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives:

Participants will:

  • Understand the principles of PCP/FCP, clearly defining what PCP/FCP is and distinguishing these from other approaches to practice
  • Recognise the importance of the need for the development of person-centred cultures in healthcare organisations, and the leadership approach which best supports this
  • Identify the challenges posed for HSCPs when adopting person and family centred approaches to practice
  • Acquire a critical understanding of the Person-centred Practice Framework and its component parts
  • Be able to apply the Person-centred Practice Framework to enhance professional practice with focus on; knowing and understanding self, communicating and relating effectively and authentically, shared decision making, working holistically and evaluation processes.
  • Reflect on ‘where we are at’ being clear in one’s intentions in progressing the future development of person and family centred healthcare services; as individuals, as practice educators and as leaders within a team or organisation.
