Phonetic transcription for speech and language therapists                  – a refresher

Facilitated by Dr Irena Yanushevskaya (Trinity College Dublin and NUI Galway)

This workshop is aimed at Speech and Language Therapists who would like to refresh their knowledge of phonetic transcription theory and to reflect on how to enhance their transcription skills in clinical practice.

The workshop will consist of two parts:

Part 1: Refresher of the transcription tools and how to use them

  • the IPA and ExtIPA, diacritics
  • types of transcription
  • transcription of vowels and consonants
  • time constraints, ‘bad habits’ and optimal choices

Part 2: Practical transcription (transcribe, compare notes and discuss)

In the course of the workshop, the participant will get the opportunity:

  • to review the basics of phonetic transcription theory and practice
  • to engage in practical transcription tasks and peer discussions
  • to reflect on their current transcription skills and to consider ways to enhance them
