IASLT are delighted to host the Special Interest Group in Stammering's upcoming online study day on 28th November with special guest speakers Assistant Professor Hope Gerlach-Houck, PhD, Professor Courtney Byrd, PhD, presenters from the SIG in Stammering and special guest Bevin Murphy.
Hope is an assistant professor at Western Michigan University in the United States.
Her research investigates how people who stutter experience and respond to stigma. Her work has been funded by the American Speech Language Hearing Association. She oversees individual and group therapy for people who stutter of all ages. She enjoys learning from and with the stuttering community.
Courtney is a Full Professor, Associate Chair, and Graduate Advisor in the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences at The University of Texas at Austin, where she also serves as Founding and Executive Director of the Arthur M Blank Center for Stuttering Education and Research, which has three core branches including the Michael and Tami Lang Stuttering Institute, the Dealey Family Foundation Stuttering Clinic, and the Dr.Jennifer and Emanuel Bodner Developmental Stuttering Lab.
The Blank Center’s mission is to change the world for people who stutter by 1) providing access to quality care at no cost to those of all ages who stutter, 2) fostering a global pipeline of speech-language pathologists and researchers who specialise in stuttering through national and international training of undergraduate students, graduate students, and practicing clinicians, and 3) generating new knowledge about the underlying nature and best practices.
Dr. Byrd has 100+ peer-reviewed publications and has dedicated her life’s work to improving understanding of stuttering, as well as developing a distinct standard of CARE (Communication, Advocacy, Resiliency, and Education), through which culturally and linguistically diverse children, teens, and adults are empowered to speak confidently, communicate effectively, and advocate meaningfully so that stuttering never stops them from living their lives to the fullest.
Bevin is a young Irish person who has stammered most of her life. She is an inspiration not only to people of all generations who stammer, but also to everyone interested in understanding our journeys to become at ease with and confident in our unique identities. Bevin is an advocate, writer, blogger and podcaster who shares her story and wisdom in her blog My Stutter and I and more recently in a new podcast series that she co-hosts with Stephen Greene, Stammering: A life less Ordinary
Mary has a special interest in working with and learning from people who stutter. She works in Cork Kerry Community Healthcare. Publications include: ‘Building Resilience in Children through Camp Dream. Speak. Live.’ in conjunction with Courtney Byrd and ‘Narrative Practice in Stuttering Therapy’ in conjunction with Fiona Ryan. Both are in Case Reports of Stuttering and Cluttering, eds. K.Eggars and M.Leahy (Routledge/Taylor and Francis, 2022). Recent conference presentations include a poster, ’Stuttering: what has love got to do with it?’ at Oxford Dysfluency Conference (2021).
Fiona works with children, teenagers, adults who stutter and their families. She has co-authored several chapters of specialist books on stammering in conjunction with Mary O'Dwyer; most recently ‘Narrative Practice in Stuttering Therapy’, in Case Reports of Stuttering and Cluttering, eds. K. Eggars and M. Leahy (Routledge/Taylor and Francis, 2022) and 'Narrative practice: identifying and changing problem stories about stammering' in Stammering Resources for Adults and Teenagers, Integrating New Evidence into Clinical Practice ed Trudy Stewart (Taylor and Francis)
