We are delighted to welcome Professor Helen Stringer to present on the importance of agreed terminology in speech sound disorders.
The terminology we use to describe the speech, language and communication disorders should be clear support our clinical decision making. Following on from the work by the CATALISE consortium to agree terminology for developmental language disorder, there was an identified need to work together to agree terminology for speech sound disorders (SSD). With members of the UK and Ireland Child Speech Disorder Research Network, Helen Stringer led a piece of work consulting speech and language therapists (SLTs) across the UK to agree terminology to be used in practice for SSD. Helen was lead author on the 2024 Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) Speech Sound Disorder Guidance, which sets out the agreed terminology and classification for SSD in the UK. This webinar will describe the process of gaining consensus, examine the evidence base and underlying theory for the recommended terminology, providing a springboard for your own discussions.
Professor Helen Stringer is a specialist in speech sound disorder (SSD) and behaviour change. Her work focuses on implementing and evaluating evidence based interventions for children and young people with speech, language and communication needs. After working in Education and the NHS as a speech and language therapist, Helen now works at Newcastle University, UK. Helen is a member of the of the UK and Ireland Child Speech Disorder Research Network and the MISLToe_SSD team. MISLToe_SSD is developing a routine data collection protocol to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions for children with SSD as they are implemented in practice.
