This Stammering Plus study day has been running in the Michael Palin Centre since 2019. IASLT are delighted to host this event in response to requests from SLTs about how to support children who stammer (CWS) who are autistic. The day will provide an overview of core facts and principles related to this intersectionality in order to stimulate discussion about adapting our clinical work for CWS under 7 (e.g. Palin PCI) and for CWS aged 7-14 (e.g. Family Communication Skills) who are autistic. The training will be supported by case presentations and videos. It is complemented well by attending the formal Palin PCI training course.

Marie Halpin has over 10 years of experience working as a SLT. She has a wealth of expertise across the age ranges, and has worked across education settings, clinic services and specialist contexts. Her areas of clinical expertise include Autism and Stammering, and with a particular interest in the intersectionality between Autism and Stammering and offering neurodivergent affirming supports.
Her background includes working as a specialist SLT in Autism in London. Her role involved working within the integrated neurodevelopmental diagnostic team, mainstream schools and Autism specialist provisions. She is trained in the delivery of a range of related therapies, including Attention Autism, Intensive Interaction, SCERTS, Hanen More Than Words, Hanen TalkAbility, Makaton, Lámh QQI etc. She also worked as a specialist at the Michael Palin Centre for many years. This involved specialist consultations and clinical work with children, young people and their families either face-face or via telehealth. She is trained in a range of therapies for people who stammer, including Palin PCI, Family Communication Skills Therapy, The Camperdown Program, CBT, Solution-Focused Therapy etc.
She developed the study day ‘Stammering Plus’ which runs at the MPC since May 2019, and has presented on this at international levels, including at the Oxford Dysfluency Conference 2021. She co-authored the research on supporting stammering in autistic children.
Within recent years, Marie worked as the National SLT service for the NCSE in Ireland. She led on national SLCN training/CPD for teachers at primary and secondary level and provided sustained in-school support. Marie no longer works in the public health sector but she continues to work in Ireland in private practice, offering supervision, training and therapy. Marie has previously facilitated training on behalf of IASLT and was very well-received, with outstanding feedback from course participants on each occasion.
Gemma Clarke has been a SLT for 16 years and has been at the MPC for the past ten. Gemma works with children and young people who stammer and their parents, and with adults who stammer. Before working at MPC she worked in a specialist language unit and held an Early Years clinic caseload where she developed her skills in working with children with Autism and children who stammer. Her current caseload at MPC includes clients with a range of additional and complex needs including learning disability, Downs Syndrome and Autism.
She is passionate about working holistically with clients; ensuring therapy is tailored to the specific needs of the child or young person and their family. Gemma is part of the MPC teaching team and teaches a range of MPC courses including Palin PCI Therapy; Working with Primary School Aged Children; and Working with Secondary School aged Students. Gemma is also responsible for delivering the Palin PCI Accreditation programme.
She supports MPC colleagues and external SLTs through clinical supervision. Gemma has trained in a range of psychological approaches, including SFBT, and is a master practitioner and trainer in Neurolinguistic Programming. Gemma is involved in small-scale research projects and recently conducted a study into the use of telehealth for assessment and therapy at the MPC. Gemma also presented at the Stammering Plus study days since May 2019 and also co-authored the research paper on supporting stammering in autistic children.
