Mental Health First Aid for HSCPs - 25th & 26th August 2026

Participant allocation:

This is a multidisciplinary event organised by the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists (ISCP). The course has been funded by the HSCP Office, HSE.

As such, places are available to HSCPs in the publicly funded healthcare service only.

Background:

Mental health difficulties are frequently encountered across health and social care settings, regardless of clinical specialty. HSCPs often engage with individuals experiencing distress, anxiety or emerging mental health problems in the context of physical illness, disability or social stressors. However, many clinicians report limited formal training in how to recognise mental health difficulties early or respond appropriately within their professional role.

This programme addresses an identified learning need by equipping HSCPs with practical, evidencebased skills to recognise signs of mental illhealth, provide initial support and facilitate timely referral. The course focuses on clinically relevant scenarios and emphasises safe, personcentred responses within scope of practice. Strengthening mental health literacy and confidence among HSCPs supports safer, more holistic care delivery and aligns with national priorities relating to integrated care, staff wellbeing and early intervention across community and rehabilitation services.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Recognise common signs and symptoms of mental health difficulties encountered in healthcare settings.
  • Provide initial, evidencebased support to individuals experiencing mental health distress.
  • Communicate effectively and empathetically while maintaining professional boundaries.
  • Support timely signposting and referral to appropriate mental health services.
  • Apply selfcare strategies to support their own mental health and resilience in the workplace.
