The Principles of Neuroaffirmative Practice - 16th June 2025

 

This is a one day training course for HSCPs working with adults and children and is part of a joint CPD initiative involving Irish Association of Speech and Language Therapists (IASLT), Irish Nutrition and Dietetic Institute (INDI), Association of Occupational Therapists of Ireland (AOTI), Irish Association of Social Workers (IASW) and Podiatry Ireland. Supported by funding from the National HSCP Office, priority is for those employed in publicly funded health care settings. Places will be offered on a first come first served basis to HSCPs currently employed by and working in the public health sector.

Learning Outcomes:

Participants will learn:

  • The principles of Neuroaffirmative practice.
  • Up-to-date terminology and resources relating to same.
  • Practical elements of adapting your service to become Neuroaffirmative in practice.
  • How to support families through a Neuroaffirmative assessment process.
  • Post-assessment multidisciplinary support for children and their families - what post-assessment support should include and what should not be featured.
  • Linking families in with the Autistic community - how to go about this.
  • Discussion and questions from the audience.
  • Links to resources and materials that are helpful in a Neuroaffirmative assessment process.

Speaker Bios:

Dr. Maeve Kavanagh is Co- Principal Clinical Psychologist at The Adult Autism Practice and co-founder of Childversity, a Neuro-Affirmative children's practice. She is an experienced clinician, who is highly skilled in collaborative autism assessments and has a strong commitment to promoting a neuro-affirmative approach.

Tara O’Donnell-Killen is the founder and CEO of Thriving Autistic, a nonprofit specialising in supporting the wellbeing of Autistic adults. She is a psychologist, researcher, lecturer & co-author of the Adult Autism Assessment Handbook: A Neurodiversity Affirmative Approach. Tara is also an Autistic parent of 3 Autistic children.

If you are registering your interest for this course:

  • This course is open to IASLT members and non-members.
  • As this course is funded by the NHSCP office, for prioritisation you must be working in a  publicly funded health service
  • It is the applicant’s responsibility to make sure that the training course fulfils a CPD need identified as part of their own CPD planning.
  • You must commit to attending the entire length of the course.
  • You must observe the cancellation policy.

This event has a limited number of places, the cost per attendee is significantly subsidised by funding from the National HSCP Office, applicants must give a minimum 10 days notice of cancellation, by emailing kathleencpdadmin@iaslt.ie

This notice is required so that we can reallocate cancelled places.

Failure to give 10 days notice will result in:

  • Exclusion from further HSE funded CPD events for minimum 12 months.
  • Requirement to reimburse the FULL cost of the course.

Payments need to be made via the payment link provided as this is an integral step in our automatic event management system. If your employer will be covering the cost of this course,  we suggest that if possible you make the payment and recoup the cost. If this isn't possible, you may also copy your payment link and send to your accounts department so that they can make the payment by card.
