Rationale:

  • Chronic cough and respiratory conditions is a new and emerging area of practice for SLTs.  It is part of IASLT’s current strategy to highlight and support this emerging area of practice as part of the current strategic plan.
  • Growing SLT caseloads of chronic cough, voice difficulties and breathing and swallowing difficulties due to many factors including COVID-19, Long Covid, expanding ageing populations, and increasing caseloads of people with neurological disorders due to ageing population, people living longer due to advances in medicine, and increased diagnoses of other neurological conditions.  (Neurological Alliance of Ireland, Feb. 2021)
  • This training aligns with the ongoing rollout of SLT-led ENT services in the  community, as well as in acute settings, targeting voice, chronic cough and FEDS difficulties, due to acute and chronic conditions.
  • IASLT training needs analysis (2024) highlights a rising trend in demand for training in the area of Voice, Respiration and Swallow conditions, all of which constitute approximately 700 CPD requests received by IASLT in the last 12 months.
