Are the National Clinical Guideline for Stroke for the United Kingdom and Ireland reflected in clinical practice? Perspectives of Irish and UK healthcare practitioners working in stroke

The most recent National Clinical Guideline for Stroke for the UK and Ireland was published in 2023. The literature notes that there are many barriers that prevent adherence to clinical guidelines. This study aims to explore the extent to which recommendations in the National Clinical Guideline for Stroke for the UK and Ireland (2023) are reflected in clinical practice.

Healthcare professionals currently or recently working in stroke in Ireland and the United Kingdom are invited to complete an anonymous online survey. This survey will ask participants to indicate which clinical guideline relates to their own area of work and to estimate the levels of adherence to these guidelines in their own clinical practice. They will be given the opportunity to indicate the facilitators, barriers and challenges they encounter in meeting same.

Should you consent to participate, you will be asked to complete the online survey, which includes questions about your professional experience, indicate awareness of current guidelines related to your specific service, you will rate the extent to which your service(s) reflect these guideline recommendations, and share opinions on potential future changes in services to improve adherence to these recommendations. The survey will take approximately 10-15 minutes of your time.

Participation in this study is completely voluntary. All information you provide is automatically anonymous, as we do not ask you for your contact details, exact locations of your service provision (apart from country and county, but not where in the county you work), and, IP or email addresses will not be collected at any point, meaning the data you provide cannot be traced back to you.

You maintain the right to withdraw from the study at any stage up to the point of data submission. However, once submitted, it will not be possible to identify and therefore delete your data.

The data will be stored on the University College Cork OneDrive system and subsequently on the UCC Server. The data will be stored for a minimum of 10 years. This research will contribute to a final year Speech and Language Therapy research dissertation, under the supervision of Dr Helen Kelly, Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences, University College Cork. The information you provide may contribute to research papers and/or conference presentations in the future. This research has received ethical approval from UCC Clinical Therapies- Social Research Ethics Committee, Cork, Ireland.
