Stigma and Self Image After Glossectomy: Patients Perspectives

My name is Leah Behan and I am a third year Clinical Speech and Language Studies student in Trinity College Dublin. Under the supervision of Dr Julie Regan, I will be conducting a study this month on the challenges patients face after total, subtotal, hemi or partial glossectomy. My study will focus primarily on stigma and self-image after surgery. It will involve taking part in semi-structured interviews over Zoom or in person in Trinity College Dublin.

We are doing this study to understand the experiences of people that have had a glossectomy (a surgery that is used to remove part or all of the tongue). Studies have not been done on this topic before, and we would like to explore the challenges you face. We really want to look at your challenges regarding self-image and stigma surrounding your surgery.

This project is being done as part of a Final Year Project for an undergraduate degree of Clinical Speech and Language Studies in Trinity College Dublin.

The study has been approved through our school wide ethics committee in Trinity College Dublin. (see: https://www.tcd.ie/slscs/research/ethics/). It is a low risk study and will have very minimal impact on anyone involved.
