Children's Health Ireland Paediatric FEDS Course - 22nd and 23rd January 2024. Follow-up day - 7th May 2024

NB: Participants must attend all 3 dates. CPD Certificates will not be provided unless the 3 dates are completed.

Who this workshop is for?

  • Speech and language therapists who have an active FEDS caseload in their place of work or who plan to establish or re-establish a FEDS service (e.g. there may have been a service previously which was discontinued due to an empty post).
  • SLTs who are interested in building their skills and increasing their confidence in working with infants and young children with FEDS needs in a primary care or CDNT setting.

Prerequisites to attend the workshop:


1. Education:

  • Dysphagia qualification and previous theoretical training in dysphagia(note this workshop will not focus on theoretical knowledge of dysphagia and is not a qualification course).

2. Access to FEDS Cases Within Current Role:

  • Currently working in a service which cares for infants and young children with FEDS needs.
  • Be able to commit to working with at least 2 infants / young children with FEDS needs within your service between workshop dates and follow-up tutorial. You will be required to video sessions for discussion at the follow-up day.

3. Named Supervisor and Service Manager Consent:

  • Have your manager’s signed consent that you will have access to and be working with a FEDS caseload during this course.
  • Have a named supervisor for FEDS cases who will provide supervision to you during your FEDS course and who will sign the attached consent form.

4. Case Study Submission:

  • Submission of the attached case study template outlining a FEDS care you are currently or have recently been involved with.

5. Completion of the CHI online course:

  • 'Paediatric Aspiration and Videofluoroscopy: The evidence and the practicalities' (Link to the recording will be sent to you once you have secured your place on this course; cost included in this course)  

 Desirable:

  • Some experience of having worked with infants or young children with FEDS needs, with or without support, would be advantageous.
  • This training is not suitable for SLTs who already have advanced or specialist FEDS skills.

Aims of the workshop:

  • To be able to apply theoretical knowledge about paediatric feeding difficulties to clinical practice.
  • To increase confidence in working with infants and young children with FEDS needs within a primary care or CDNT setting.
  • To be able to manage infants and young children with FEDS needs independently (with access to appropriate supervision).
  • To recognise when an issue is beyond the therapist’s competency level and to know when to ask for help and make an onward referral as appropriate.
  • To create a peer group and a support network for SLTs working in FEDS.

Structure of the workshop:

The course will be interactive and will be based on video case discussions.

The workshop will include:

  • Short lectures
  • Video review and analysis
  • MDT discussion
  • Group discussion
  • Group presentations
  • A follow-up tutorial will be held after 4 months. Participants will be required to present a video case study from their own practice at this tutorial.

Course Providers:

1. Cathy McQuillan is a Clinical Specialist Speech and Language Therapist currently providing SLT services in CHI at Temple Street. Cathy currently works in the Outpatient FEDS service within Temple St providing input to a varied caseload of children with complex FEDS needs. Her main areas of experience include providing FEDS services to the Neurosciences services, Neonates and Videofluoroscopy. She is also involved in a research project exploring the clinical outcomes of children who are Eating and Drinking with Acknowledged Risk (EDAR) and FEDS outcomes in children born with trachea-oesophageal fistulas (TOF). Cathy qualified in 2010 and started working in the area of acute FEDS in a neonatal intensive care unit and paediatric wards in a large teaching hospital in Singapore. Previously, Cathy has also worked in paediatric and adult acute services in Oxford and Manchester. Her training includes SOS, SOFFI and FEES 

2. Melissa Elson is a Clinical Specialist Speech and Language Therapist currently providing SLT services in CHI Crumlin. Melissa currently works in the Neonatology service within Crumlin providing input to a varied caseload of neonates with complex FEDS needs, both as in and outpatients. Her main areas of experience include providing FEDS services to the Paediatric population, Neonates and Videofluoroscopy Swallow Studies (VFSS). She is also involved in a research project exploring the FEDS outcomes in children born with trachea-oesophageal fistulas (TOF). Melissa qualified in 2015 and went on to obtain her Masters degree in speech-and language therapy, specifically the prevalence and risk factors in oropharyngeal dysphagia in high-risk neonates. Melissa started working in the area of acute FEDS and in a regional hospital in South Africa for both adults and paediatrics. She then went on to specialise in the neonatal and paediatric population. Her training includes SOFFI and breastfeeding, where she has obtained her competencies in neonates, VFSS and tracheostomies as well.

    between the workshop and follow-up day.
  • Signed confirmation that you have a supervisor for the duration of this course
    (unfortunately we are unable to provide external supervision, see consent form on information page above)
  • Case study submission (see template on information page above)

  • This course is open to IASLT members and non-members.
  • It is the applicant’s responsibility to make sure that the training course fulfils a CPD need identified as part of their own CPD planning.
  • You must commit to attending all 3 days.
